The U.S. Health Services Department
has provided a list of questions and answers about ergonomics in
general. This resource can prove useful in the full set up of an
ergonomic workstation, including positioning of monitors, keyboard, and
lights as well as ergonomic exercises you and your employees can
practice to further prevent on-the-job injuries.

It feels a little odd to call the act
of sitting "work." Everybody knows that sitting is less physically
demanding than walking or standing, right? In Western culture, sitting
is synonymous with relaxation itself. Montgomery Burns summed up the
prevailing view when he asked, "From the mightiest pharaoh to the
lowliest peasant, who doesn't enjoy a good sit?"
But when people are parked in a chair for most of their waking
hours, new stresses will cause new aches and pains. Extended periods of
sitting are hard on the back, putting added pressure on the
intervertebral discs that cushion impact on the spine. And circulation
from the feet and legs can be hampered by simple gravity and aggravated
by poor chair design, causing numbness and discomfort as blood struggles
to return to the heart. The human body simply isn't built to remain in
one position for hours at a time.
Institutions with large staffs that spend their workday sitting at
computer terminals have begun to recognize the health issues surrounding
extended sitting. A World Bank study found that their staff suffered
more frequently from lower back pain than from any other disorders. The
solution? More comfortable chairs, which the study called "a primordial
aspect to consider in terms of staff's well-being at work."
Other studies have reinforced the importance of healthy,
supportive chairs. A 2001 study by Cornell University's Human Factors
and Ergonomics Laboratory found that workers who were given ergonomic
products and trained in their use reported an average 40% decline in
musculoskeletal problems in only eight months. The Centers for Disease
Control states flatly, "The chair is the starting point for a properly
designed work station."
When firms have introduced company-wide ergonomic improvements,
the effect on the bottom line has been dramatic. In 1993, employees of
Sun Microsystems filed over 300 workers' compensation claims in
California alone for repetitive motion injuries related to prolonged
computer use. Concerned over the cost of such claims and the attendant
loss of productivity, Sun provided ergonomic chairs and other equipment
to any employees who requested them. Over the next ten years, claims
fell precipitously despite a sharp increase in the number of Sun
employees, and the average cost of each claim fell from $12,000 in 1992
to about $2,500 in 2002.
As employers have increasingly felt the economic impact of a
cramped and cranky workforce, the ergonomic chair has gone from novelty
to necessity. Several manufacturers have marketed high-end ergonomic
chairs to companies willing to invest in the health and morale of their
employees. Every model offers some of the same supportive features for
increased back, neck, and circulatory health, but choosing the right erg
chair from a crowded field can be a daunting proposition.
Adding to the confusion is the status and cache that some models
have acquired, irrespective of their actual utility. Budgets are tighter
and leaner today than just a few years ago, and far fewer employers are
willing to pay more for showpiece chairs with the "right" name brand.
So how can you sift through the hype, filter out the noise, and
make sense of the bewildering array of choices in the ergonomic-chair
field? How can you be sure that dollars spent on these funny-looking
high-tech sitting machines will translate into a healthier, happier
staff? |

In a perfect world,
that chair
you're sitting in would never cross your mind. You'd be free to focus on the
really important stuff, like that looming deadline, that project meeting
tomorrow, or that new lunch place everybody's talking about. And best of
all, you wouldn't be distracted by the aches and pains you've picked up from
sitting at your computer all day.
Multiply these
problems by however many people work in your office, and you can
practically see the dollar signs flying out the window. Every minute spent
worried about comfort, every sick day due to skeleton- muscular complaints,
every worker's comp claim adds to the strain on your bottom line.
Since our world
isn't perfect, you need a chair that is. The science of
ergonomics tells us that well-designed equipment can relieve discomfort and
fatigue, and prevent many common work-related health problems. If you sit at
a computer desk at work, your armrests should be at the right height for you
and your keyboard, and the right width for your shoulders. You should lean
toward your screen at the proper angle. Your knees should bend just beyond
the edge of the seat, with your feet flat on the floor. Most of all, the
lumbar region of your back needs firm support. Prolonged periods of sitting
exert pressure on your spine and back, and that can lead to long-term back
trouble.
Now consider your
chair. Chances are it was designed for some mythical "average
person" who only exists on somebody's drawing board. Is the seat height
right for you? Is the seat back at a comfortable angle? How about the seat
angle? Do you feel like you're sliding out of your chair? And those armrests
- do your elbows have to reach outward for them, or are your shoulders
hunched because they're too close? You can adjust the
WWCS- EZ2
Chair to your
personal specifications in all of these areas.
With the
WWCS
- EZ2 Chair,
our design team grants every chair wish you've ever made, and some that you
haven't. The adjustable lumbar support reinforces your back where your tired
muscles need it most. The waterfall seat design delicately cradles your
body, conforming to your unique contours. You may not realize you need a
sliding seat pan, to adjust seat depth, but your body does. And your
shoulders and middle back will appreciate the WWCS
- EZ2 Chair's generously sized
chair back. (Everybody pays attention to the lumbar, but the rest of your
back needs love, too.)
We understand that you're working under a
budget, and you worry that ergonomic chairs are beyond your means. Ask Sun
Microsystems how well their ergonomic investment paid off. In 1992, they
spent a total of $1.5 million on workers' comp claims for repetitive motion
injuries. After introducing ergonomic equipment and training, these
expenditures shrunk to less than $100,000 in the first nine months of 2002,
despite a huge growth in the number of employees.
WWCS- EZ2 Chair
delivers as much health benefit as any chair in the field, at a fraction of
the cost. In the leaner corporate environment of today, it isn't just a nice
piece of furniture; it's also a winning investment in the well-being and
productivity of you and your workforce. |

Chair come with repair &
maintenance instructions, and

and the seat with a mild shampoo or upholstery cleaner, occasionally or as
needed.
Is the
WWCS- EZ2
Chair useful as a conference room chair?
-
Yes. The tilting back is particularly
helpful in this capacity. We also offer a companion chair, with the same
design as the WWCS
- EZ2 Chair but on a sled base.

Adjusting Your Chair! |
|
Now that
you've got your WWCS- EZ2 Chair, it's
time to get to know it. Proper usage of the ezz-chair is essential for
taking full advantage of its features. We understand that the
WWCS
- EZ2 Chair's array of controls can be a little daunting, but it's not as
tough as it looks. We promise. Each feature headline below links to a
video to help you. Just take a deep breath and follow these
instructions. |
Seat Height

|
| |
|
To properly adjust seat height, use the
seat height adjustment located below the seat on the right side. Raise
the lever with your weight off the chair and allow the seat to reach its
highest point. Then, slowly lower yourself down until your feet are
firmly placed on the floor. When the height is set correctly, your hips
should be slightly higher than your knees.
|
Seat Pan
 |
| |
|
Now, on to the seat. The seat pan
adjustment control allows you to slide the seat pan forward or backwards
in relation to the back, for the best possible knee position. The
adjustment control is the most forward lever on the left side of the
chair beneath the seat. To adjust the position of the seat, simply lift
the lever and slide the seat forward or backward to the desired
position. Once you've found the position that's most comfortable,
release the lever and the chair will lock in place. |
Lumbar Support
 |
|
|
Next up is the active lumbar support,
which provides continuous support and constant alignment. Simply slide
the lumbar support up or down to the proper height. |
Back Angle

|
| |
|
The
WWCS
- EZ2 Chair back helps maintain equal
distribution of body weight by providing continuous support with no seat
rise. The back is lockable in any position. To adjust the angle of the
seat back, lift the back tilt lever, which is the rearmost lever below
seat level on the left side of the chair. Lean back or forward to the
desired position. Then push the lever back down to lock it into place.
The back should lock firmly into place. |
Back
Tension
 |
| |
|
|
The resistance of the chair back can be
continuously adjusted to provide the most comfortable level of support
while you are leaning back in the chair. Simply turn the knob located
directly under the middle of the seat to either increase or decrease the
resistance of the back. |
Arm Height

|
| |
|
|
Arm supports are adjustable in both
height and width to provide you with the most precise support in a
natural sitting position. To adjust arm height, push the button located
on the vertical armrest support that's located on each side of the
chair. First, push the arms down to their lowest setting. Then, while
you are sitting on the chair, relax your shoulders and arms down to your
side. Once they are relaxed, raise the arm supports until you can gently
rest your elbows and forearms. |
Arm Width
 |
| |
|
|
Then, to adjust the width of the
armrests, use the lever located under the seat, directly in front of the
armrest support on each side. Push the lever forward to unlock, then
slide the armrest to the desired width. Pull the lever back to lock the
armrest into place. Repeat for the other armrest. |
Pivot Control

|
|
|
|
Finally, the
WWCS
- EZ2 Chair
offers a unique synchronous knee pivot control that can optimize the
chair in three ways: forward, for writing or keyboard work; middle, for
normal seating; and rearward, for conferencing or relaxing. To set this
adjustment, use the tilt lever, which is the most forward lever on the right
side of the chair, under the level of the seat. While leaning back, rotate
the lever to one of the three positions.
That wasn't so hard,
was it? Don't hesitate to readjust any parts that seem uncomfortable or
unnatural. There's no one correct way to sit for everyone, so feel free to
shape the
WWCS- EZ2 Chair to suit your body. Time spent now learning what the
WWCS
- EZ2 Chair
can do will pay off in years of healthy sitting! |

Let's get
philosophical for a moment. Imagine you've got an
WWCS- EZ2 Chair at your desk right
now. While you're enjoying the effortless comfort and admiring the tasteful
styling of the WWCS- EZ2 Chair, it may not occur to you to ask where it came from.
When was that chair born? How did this mass of metal, plastic and fabric
become a beautiful and useful object that you can sit on? As the
WWCS-EZ2 Chair
traveled the long road from our drawing board to your desk, at what moment
did the theory of an WWCS-EZ2 Chair become the reality?
Like all great ideas, the
WWCS- EZ2 Chair is an
attempt to answer a puzzling question. We wondered why the proven benefits
of ergonomic chair design were confined to the elite who could afford it.
Those who stood to gain the most from the ergonomic revolution- employers
burdened by the low productivity and workers' comp costs associated with
repetitive motion injuries- were shut out of the market. Certainly, in an
era of economic uncertainty and slimmer corporate budgets, there was a need
for a high-quality ergonomic chair with a reasonable price tag. We decided
to find a way to meet that need.
If we look back far enough into the
WWCS
- EZ2 Chair family tree, we see miners pulling iron and aluminum from a hillside, and
huge furnaces forging iron into steel. We see liquid plastic pouring into
molds, and polyester threads weaving into mesh. We see an idea taking shape.
We don't see an actual chair taking shape
until we look at the international network of suppliers that construct and
assemble the WWCS- EZ2 Chair's many components. We've scoured the globe to find the
parts that offer higher quality at lower prices, from experienced companies
with a successful track record of providing precision components. While the
mesh fabric is stretched over the skeletal structure of the chair back,
aluminum is shaped into a five-pointed star for the base, and covered in a
powder coating. Fire retardant foam is molded into a seat shape covered in
fabric. As these parts are assembled from sources around the world we see
the first glimmer of recognition, the first glimpse of the full-function
office chair to come.
Then, as trucks and planes bring the
components to our facility in St. Louis, our assembly team unites them with
American-made controls that are tailored to our exact specifications. The
reclining back sliding seat pan mechanism is bolted to the chair body, and
the armrests are attached, along with their width and height controls. Our
unique, custom-designed lumbar support is added to the mix. As a last step
in the process, the WWCS- EZ2 Chair is put through a battery of testing performed by
independent laboratories to ensure structural integrity and safety. The end
result is not just a chair anymore; it's the fully-formed
WWCS
- EZ2 Chair, in the
shape you will come to know and love.
But if a chair is defined as
a piece of furniture that people sit on, one could say that the
WWCS- EZ2 Chair
isn't really finished until somebody uses it. Open the crate, unwrap the
WWCS- EZ2 Chair, have a seat and let the
WWCS- EZ2 Chair spring into life at long last in
its new home. Pop the instructional CD into your computer and the
WWCS- EZ2 Chair
will introduce itself to you as you learn how to set the armrests for your
height and width, slide the seat pan into just the right position and
perform other adjustments to make the WWCS- EZ2
Chair your very own. For all the
work that goes into the WWCS- EZ2 Chair, for all the moments that add up to a
living, breathing work of ergonomic art, this is the moment that matters:
when you climb aboard at the last stop on its journey. Your new
WWCS- EZ2
Chair will
help support your body, and your bottom line, for years to come. If you'd
like to join the adventure, contact us about bringing the
WWCS- EZ2 Chair to your
home or office. |
